3.5 stars.As always, author Jennifer Chase’s police protocols and procedures are topflight. In “Last Girls Alive,” a cold case of a teen—missing five years from a foster shelter—becomes more complicated when workers find what seems to be the teen’s body in an old house.This series is set in a rural area of NorCal, in a small town with a sheriffs’ department—with just enough personnel, a slower pace, less specialization, etc. POVs: Detective Katie Scott, Deputy Sean McGavan, and a few others, including the murderer. There are several flashback chapters about the killer’s horrible (but cliched) childhood—including a few interesting details about mommy-dearest.I liked the bright, young cops whose detective work is steady but slow. Lots of phone calls, driving, tracking down people, driving, computer searches, driving, and trying to figure out whodunnit whilst dealing with minutiae and some politics. The mystery itself is straightforward, with the usual twists of a missing person-murder storyline. Red herrings could be better, plus there are no clues re the villain. As with most Hide-the-Villain mysteries, there is a reveal. TA-DUUUUH! This one’s a spit-ball straight outta left field. The hardworking detectives did not discover the villain, who is unremarkable . . . until he isn’t.I’m amongst a minority of reviewers, so please read this with a shaker of salt. In Katie Scott, Chase has introduced us to an amazing character! Damaged by the death if her parents but buoyed by the love of her Uncle; Katie enlisted in the military. While we only see glimpses of her time in Afghanistan in flashbacks, the resulting anxiety attacks and PTSD are interwoven into the books.Detective Katie Scott, now head if the Cold Case Unit in her hometown proves that it is possible to battle trauma and ( with the help of family, friends and an awesome retired military K9, to begin to heal. However, as in many if the cold cases Katie handles, sometimes early trauma takes its victim in an entirely different direction. The young foster children assigned to Elm Hill are abused and damaged again during by heir stay in foster care. Now, after the closing of the facility and the opening if a missing person cold case, they are turning up as dead bodies. Can Katie and her partner find the killer and stop the deaths?
